Bounces
A bounce is any audio file you exported from a project. MAKID shows every bounce on its project, so you can play, compare, and share them without digging through folders.
How a bounce gets into a project
There are three ways MAKID links a bounce to a project.
1. It’s in the project folder
Export into your Ableton project folder (or any folder inside it) and you’re done. MAKID finds it on its own.
2. Drag it onto the project
Drag an audio file from Finder or File Explorer and drop it on the project’s row in the table. MAKID links it right where it is. Nothing gets copied or moved, and you don’t need an account for this.
3. Set up a bounce folder
If you export everything to one place (like a Bounces folder on your desktop), tell MAKID where it is and it’ll file each bounce under the right project for you.
- Open Settings → Bounces
- Pick In a separate exports folder
- Choose your folder. Use Add Folder to add more than one
After you import projects, MAKID also asks Where do you keep your bounces? once, so you can set this up right there.
MAKID matches each bounce using its file name, length, and when you exported it. New exports get matched as you bounce them.
Matching runs on MAKID’s servers, so you need a free account. If you’re signed out, Settings → Bounces shows Create a free account to start matching. Only file info like names, lengths and dates gets sent. Your audio stays on your computer.
Fixing a match
Open Settings → Bounces to see how matching is going. The top line shows how many bounces are matched, how many need review, how many have no project, and how many you’ve hidden. When something needs your call, the Settings button in the navbar shows a badge with the count.
- Is this the right project? These are matches MAKID isn’t sure about. Hit Yes to confirm or No to pick the right one
- Bounces without a project: hit Pick project
- Automatic matches: if one’s wrong, hit Wrong project
- Hidden bounces: bounces you said aren’t from any project
Picking opens a search box with MAKID’s best guesses at the top. Type to search by project name, folder, or .als file name. If a bounce isn’t from any of your projects (a reference track, a demo someone sent you), hit Not from any project and MAKID stops trying to match it. Changed your mind? Open it from hidden bounces and hit Let MAKID match it again.
Unlinking a bounce
Bounces that came from a bounce folder or a drag and drop show a link icon in the project’s Link column. Hover it to see how it got there. To take one off the project, click the link icon or right-click the bounce and choose Unlink from project.
You’ll get an Undo button in case you misclick. Unlinked bounces go back to Settings → Bounces and MAKID won’t suggest that project for them again.
Bounces inside the project folder can’t be unlinked, since MAKID would just find them again on the next scan. Move the file out of the folder instead.
Primary bounce
Each project has one primary bounce. It’s the one that plays when you hit play in the table and the one that gets shared from the project’s right-click menu.
By default it’s the newest bounce. Want a different one? Expand the project and click Make primary on the bounce you want, or right-click the bounce and choose Make primary.
Make primary works by updating the file’s modified date on disk, so that bounce becomes the newest one.
Play counts
The Plays column shows how many times you’ve played each bounce. Hover it to see how many plays were you vs. autoplay (the queue moving on or looping) and when you last listened.
Out-of-date bounces
If you saved your Ableton set more than 5 minutes after your newest bounce, the player shows a small warning icon telling you how stale the bounce is. Usually that means it’s time to bounce again.
What counts as a bounce
MAKID picks up these audio types: .mp3, .mpeg, .opus, .ogg, .oga, .wav, .aac, .caf, .m4a, .m4b, .mp4, .weba, .webm, .dolby, .flac.
To be picked as a primary bounce or played from the table, a file has to be at least 2 seconds long (or at least 50 KB if MAKID can’t read its length). That keeps tiny clips and one-shots from taking over.
Only .mp3 and .wav bounces sync to your phone. See MAKID Pro & Sync.
